Abstract

This study on the soundscape memory of the Miho River presents three key findings. First, the Miho River soundscape is deeply intertwined with local residents’ experiences and emotions related to labor, rest, life, and death. Sounds and music have accompanied pivotal moments, serving as cultural assets that record both personal and communal histories. Second, ethnographic approaches proved valuable in uncovering the meanings embedded in soundscapes by directly engaging with participants to learn their experiences and memories. The study identified three overlapping and interconnected codes: sounds of rest, labor, and life. Third, humans are not the central agents in soundscape production. Instead, insects, animals, plants, the land, and human activities collectively shape the Miho River soundscape, influencing one another in the pursuit of survival and continuity. These findings illustrate the enduring connection between local communities and nature through sound.
