Abstract

This study traces the formation and transformation of the genre known as Israeli Mediterranean Music. After the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, efforts to integrate diverse populations and create a symbolic national culture were led by Ashkenazi Jews, who led the genre Songs of the Land of Israel(Shirei Eretz Israel). While the music of Yemenite Jews was selectively adopted for its perceived authenticity and local character, other Arab-Jewish musical traditions were marginalized and excluded from media and the music industry. However, these communities did not abandon their cultural heritage; instead, they expressed their difference from the dominant culture, leading to the emergence of Mizrahi music. Initially criticized for violating national artistic norms, Mizrahi music gradually expanded musical boundaries in its own distinctive way and eventually entered the mainstream, forming a new genre known as Israeli Mediterranean Music. This genre reflects the complex identities of various diaspora Jewish communities and serves as a powerful example of how marginalized groups can challenge dominant norms and reshape cultural landscapes by crossing political and cultural boundaries.
