Abstract
Cinema is transitioning from a “screen-less” era to a “camera-less” era. The history of cinema was born from and sustained by the apparatus of the camera. Digital technology has gradually encroached upon the camera ‘s domain, and AI now presents a definitive future of cinema without cameras. The camera as a dispositif has established absolute trust in the factuality and authenticity of documentary film. How, then, can trust in documentary be secured in an era of camera-less cinema? This study examines the categories and paradigms of documentary authenticity research, and then seeks to find issues on the authenticity of documentaries in the AI Cinema era. André Bazin asserted that ‘cinema is objectivity in time’ and believed that the indexicality of photography and cinema served as a guarantee of their truth claims about reality. However, in the AI Cinema era, the emergence of synthetic images created by generative artificial intelligence no longer automatically guarantees this indexicality. This study analyzes six AI-utilizing documentaries including Welcome to Chechnya (2020), Another Body (2023), The Andy Warhol Diaries (2022), Roadrunner (2021), ENO (2024), and What Jennifer Did (2024), revealing that the authenticity of documentaries in the AI Cinema era can no longer rely on simple indexicality and can only be redefined within the triple conditions of transparency (disclosure of synthesis and sources), ethics (subject rights and relational responsibility), and institution (legal and industrial norms).
