Abstract
Oral history is a valuable research method that not only fills gaps documentary sources but also acknowledges the lived experiences of artists as historical data, offering diverse perspectives often overlooked in traditional research. Despite its potential, oral history has received limited attention in modern Korean music studies. This paper seeks to encourage a broader application of musicians’ oral histories collected over the past two decades at the ARCO Arts Archive. It examines the current state of oral histories and related research in modern Korean music, exploring key topics such as the transformation of music scenes during the Japanese colonial period, the post-liberation era, the Korean War, and the 1950s-70s; significant personal networks; and the rediscovery of underrecognized musicians, non-mainstream genres, and regional musical cultures. Through this exploration, the study demonstrates how oral histories can deepen our understanding of modern Korean music.
