국문요약구술사는 최근 들어 역사학계와 문화인류학계를 중심으로 주목을 받고 있는 질적 연구 방법의 하나이다 . 구술사는 문자로 자신의 사상과 감정을 표현할 수 있는 능력을 갖추지 못한 사람들도 역사 서술의 주체로 참여할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 점에서 ‘역사의 민주화’를 가져온 계기를 제공하였다는 평가를 받기도 한다 . 구술사는 문자기록이 누락되거나 부족한 부분을 보충하기 위해서 서구의 도서관이나 아카이브에서 활발하게 도입되고 있다 . <한국 근· 현대 예술사구술채록사업>은 국내 최대의 문화예술 전문 도서관인 한국문화예술위원회 아르코예술정보관이 예술사 연구를 위한 기초자료의 절대적인 부족을 해소하기 위한 시도로써 추진하고 있다. 국내의 다른 구술사 수행사례와 달리 사업 시행 초기부터 자료의 수집은 물론 그 체계적인 관리와 효율적인 열람을 염두에 두고 있다. 2003년도 처음 개시 이래 2007년도까지 총 105명의 원로예술인에 대한 구술채록작업을 추진하였으며, 지난 2004년도부터는 그 성과물을 인터넷으로 서비스하고 있다. 예술사구술채록사업은 예술계를 비롯한 각계에서 커다란 반향을 일으키고 있으며 , 당초 100명의 한정된 인원만을 대상으로 하는 사업에서 아르코예술정보관의 항시 사업으로 자리를 잡는 성과를 거두었다 . 예술사구술채록사업의 성과를 지속적인 성공과 확산을 위해서는 ‘생애사’ 뿐만 아니라 예술사적 사건에 대한 채록도 병행될 필요가 있으며, 이를 통해 그 동안 예술사 서술에서 배제되거나 누락되었던 보다 다양한 예술가들의 증언을 폭넓게 채록할 필요가 있을 것이다 . 또한 연구성과의 질적 제고를 위해 채록연구를 수행할 연구자의 외연을 보다 확장하고 구술사에 대한 체계적인 교육과 훈련을 제공할 필요가 제기되고 있다 .
Abstract
Oral history, which historians and anthropologists are concerned with in recent days, is one of the new methodologies of qualitative research. Through oral history, people who cannot express their ideas and experiences with written languages can participate in recording history. For a long time, many libraries and archives in the western world have been doing oral history for their collecting archive materials. The purpose of this article is to make an introduction of Oral History Project on Korean Modern and Contemporary Arts, initiated and managed by Arko Arts Library and Information Center, which is the largest special library for arts in Korea. First, I introduce some academic theories and historical backgrounds oral history. Second, I illustrate the progress of oral history projects having been launched in the western world. After that, I discuss the background, the development, and the outcomes of the Oral History Project on Korean Modern and Contemporary Arts along with its services provided and use of its outputs. This project is aimed for collecting useful resources for studying on history of Korean modern and contemporary arts. For 5 years (2003-2007), it has performed oral history interviews with 105 famous old artists. And it made so many useful materials - tape recordings, audio-video recordings and transcripts etc about life history of artists. Some of this materials can be used at homepage of Arko. Finally, I propose some ideas for the development of this Project. To sustain performances of this project, I think it will be expanded with not only life history of artists but also testimony about accidents of history of arts. And I suggest needs of systematic training and education about oral history methodology and interview skill for interviewers.
