‘용서 불가능성’에서 ‘망각 불가능성’으로… 유해(遺骸) 발굴의 미학적 재현: 다큐멘터리 영화 <206: 사라지지 않는> 중심으로

가공할만한 국가폭력의 희생자가 가해자를 용서하는 것이 가능한가? 본 논문은 홀로코스트와 한국전쟁 민간인 대량학살 등 가공할만한 국가폭력 피해자들의 ‘용서 불가능성’을 논한 블라디미르 장켈레비치와 자크 데리다의 ‘용서하다’ 개념을 해체주의 시각으로 짚어보고자 한다. 이를 기반으로 장켈레비치의 ‘조건적 용서’, 데리다의 ‘무조건적 용서’, 아렌트의 ‘정치적 용서’를 들여다보고 데리다와 아렌트가 언급한 ‘우정의 정치학’과 ‘우정의 연대’가 수행적 역사 발굴의 실천적 대안으로 작동할 수 있는지 살펴본다. 허철녕 감독의 다큐멘터리 영화 <206: 사라지지 않는>(2021)은 민간인들이 중심이 되어 ‘한국전쟁기 민간인 학살 유해 발굴단’을 구성해 수년간 유해발굴에 나선 현장의 기록이다. 감독은 유해발굴 과정을 기록하는데 그치지 않고 유해들과 교감하는 발굴 참가자들의 서사와 함께 유해의 서사, 유해의 시선을 미학적으로 재현한다. 국가가 공표한 공식 역사가 아닌, 각자의 수행적 역사 읽기에서 비롯된 미학적 재현을 분석하고, 피해자들의 ‘용서 불가능성’이 발굴단 개개인의 서사를 통해 ‘망각 불가능성’으로 치환되는 지점들을 살펴본다.
Abstract
Would it be possible for a victim of a formidable state violence to forgive the perpetrator? This study adopts a deconstructivist perspective to examine the concept of ‘forgiveness’ from Vladimir Jankelevitch and Jacques Derrida, who conducted a research about ‘impossibility of forgiveness’ of victims of formidable state violence — such as the Holocaust and the genocide of civilians during the Korean War. Based on this, we look into Jankelevitch’s ‘conditional forgiveness’, Derrida’s ‘unconditional forgiveness’, and Arendt’s ‘political forgiveness’, to examine whether the ‘politics of friendship’ and ‘solidarity of friendship’ mentioned by Derrida and Arendt can work as a practical alternative to excavating performative history. Film director Heo Chul-nyung’s documentary film 206: Unearthed(2021) is a record of the site where civilians formed the ‘Korean War Civilian Massacre Excavation Team’ and excavated the remains for several years. The film not only records the excavation process, but also aesthetically representation the narrative of the remains and the gaze of the remains, along with the narratives of the excavation participants interacting with the remains. This study analyzes the aesthetic representation that proceeds from one’s unique understanding of history(performative history), far beyond the official record published by the state, and examines the point where the ‘impossibility of forgiveness’ of victims becomes substituted by the ‘impossibility of forgetting’ through the narratives of each excavation participants.
