‘가해자 연행(演行)’, 국가폭력 재현의 수행성 연구: 다큐멘터리 <콩고 재판>, <액트 오브 킬링> 중심으로

이 논문은 다큐멘터리에서 ‘가해자의 연행’을 통한 국가폭력 재현의 수행성을 데리다의 해체론으로 들여다보려는 시도이다. 자크 데리다는 거짓말은 어떤 사실이나 상태가 아니고 의도적인 행위, 곧 ‘거짓말 하기’이며 진실의 효과를 거두려는 과정에서 환원 불가능한 가상화에 이른다고 강조한다. 밀로 라우의 콩고 대학살을 다룬 다큐멘터리 연극 <콩고 재판>(2017)과 조슈아 오펜하이머의 인도네시아 대학살에 대한 다큐멘터리 <액트 오브 킬링>(2012)은 가해자 중심 서사를 통해 환원 불가능한 가상화에 이른 국가폭력을 다룬다. 수십년간 은폐되고 왜곡된 국가폭력은 의도적인 가해자들의 연행을 통해 아이러니하게도 균열을 일으킨다. 가해자 중심의 연행을 통해 국가폭력의 민낯을 드러내며 진실의 재생산을 통찰하고 파괴된 진실의 복원을 수행하려는 이 두 다큐멘터리는 역사를 어떻게 재현하는가의 문제와도 맞닿아 있다. 이 논문은 ‘절대적 거짓말’이 어떻게 다시 환원 불가능한 가상화에 균열을 일으켜 진실을 소환해 냈는지 데리다의 해체주의를 통해 들여다 보고자 한다. 또한 가해자들의 ‘세상을 위한 합리적인 선택’이라는 증언에서 도출되는 한나 아렌트의 ‘악의 평범성’과 그로 인해 자행되는 ‘행정적 집단학살’의 실체를 재확인할 것이다.
Abstract
This study is an attempt to look into the performativity of national violence representation through “reenactment of perpetrators” in documentaries, using Derrida’s theory of deconstruction. Jacques Derrida emphasizes that ‘lying’ is not a fact or a condition, but an intentional act that leads to an irreducible simulation in the process of trying to achieve the effect of truth. Congo Tribunal(2017), a documentary theater directed by Milo Lau that covers the Congo Massacre incident, and Act of Killing(2012), a documentary directed by Joshua Oppenheimer that covers the Indonesian massacre, both use a perpetrator-centered narrative to deal with national violence that has reached to an irreducible simulation. National violence, which has been concealed and distorted for decades, ironically causes a crack by the intentional reenactment of the perpetrators. Through the perpetrator-centered reenactment, these two documentaries attempt to gain insight into the representation of truth and restore the destroyed truth by revealing the bare face of the national violence. There are also close connection to the issue of how to representation the history in these documentaries. This paper tries understand how ‘absolute lies’ recalled the truth by causing cracks in irreducible simulation, using Derrida’s theory of deconstruction. We will also reaffirm the reality of Hannah Arendt’s ‘The Normality of Evil’ and the ‘Administrative massacre’ committed by that, which are derived from the testimony of the perpetrators in which they argue they did a ‘reasonable choice for the world’.
