Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary school students' positioning patterns in the discourse context of small group reading discussion classes. There were two types of positioning of students. First, due to the gender difference, the position of female students as an indicator revealed conformity among boys. Second, the subordinate type depending on the power relation revealed positioning by peer relationship, and by difference in academic ability. Furthermore, it was found that students with excellent academic ability performed roles that were similar to those of teachers. Students also tended to show response to positioning or to attempt to resolve conflicts. Some were accepting while some others resisted or voiced complaints against positioning by others. To resolve conflicts, students established rules voluntarily and kept each other in check. Students set up a discussion format voluntarily and proceeded with discourse without any major conflict, in which case they grew familiar with the rules and rarely quarrelled. There were drawbacks as well. Their compliance with the rules prevented conflicts from happening, due to which students were unable to express their thoughts as freely as they would. Students in power refute and responded sarcastically to uninfluential students. Low achieving students praised high and tended to be in sympathy with high achieving students frequently.
