Abstract
This study developed an environmental education program centered on the topic of traditional ecological knowledge based on the integrated subjects for the first and second grades of elementary school in Korea’s 2022 revised curriculum. This curriculum provides teachers with the autonomy to choose topics appropriate for their local, institutional, and classroom contexts, but many struggle to select effective topics and organize the curriculum. Environmental education and its importance is mentioned in various subjects, but it does not exist as an independent subject, and therefore has no systematic curricular framework. Accordingly, this study extracted traditional Korean ecological knowledge from textbooks and existing studies to present an initial list of materials and devised areas of study through a survey of student preferences and a suitability assessment by teacher experts. Cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor goals were set for each area, and a program was devised by specifying the content and core ideas of each. The results confirmed that traditional ecological knowledge, which reflects students’ interests and teacher expertise, provided students with contextual learning experiences related to their everyday lives and balanced experiences in the three areas of the integrated curriculum. In addition, this program comprehensively integrates the “Disciplined Life,” “Wise Life,” and “Pleasant Life” principles while focusing on topics related to students’ daily lives like “food waste recycling,” “pine needle scent,” and “water conservation.” The program developed in this study will provide meaningful educational opportunities for Korean students to experience the ecological wisdom of their culture and learn a sustainable lifestyle by reinterpreting it for the modern context while also addressing teachers’ difficulties in implementing environmental education within the 2022 Revised Curriculum.
