Abstract
This study investigated the impacts of utilizing generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in elementary Korean language classrooms, particularly focusing on students’ writing processes and outcomes. Two instructional approaches were applied in two sixth-grade argumentative writing classes. One class first utilized conventional search engines before introducing a genAI tool, WRTN, and the other utilized WRTN followed by search engines. The study explored whether students’ writing processes and outcomes differed when using traditional search engines versus WRTN, and whether these differences were influenced by the students’ levels of writing competency. Analysis of participants’ search behaviors and material adoption patterns revealed that the number of searches— here defined as the frequency of keyword or prompt inputs—increased when students used WRTN compared to conventional search engines. High-competency participants used search terms more actively and autonomously, and the ways participants incorporated the retrieved information also varied according to their writing competency. However, the analysis of how students applied the retrieved materials in their writing indicated that sixth-grade students spent less time carefully reading and digesting sources when using WRTN. They also generated fewer original sentences explaining their own understanding and exhibited higher rates of plagiarism. Furthermore, comparison between Class 1 (using search engines first, then WRTN) and Class 2 (using WRTN first, then search engines) revealed that Class 2 demonstrated significantly higher plagiarism rates. This indicated that the negative writing behaviors associated with genAI use may persist across tasks. While these effects were more pronounced among students with lower writing competency, the trend was observed across competency levels. Based on these findings, this study argues for more cautious, critical decision-making when integrating genAI tools into elementary Korean language instruction.
