Abstract

This study addressed the self-esteem of first-grade students undergoing the transition into elementary school by developing and implementing an integrated curriculum using educational technology (edutech). First graders often experience emotional instability and reduced self-esteem due to unfamiliar environments and peer relationships, particularly in rural schools where peer and self-images formed in kindergarten may persist and negatively influence social development. To address these issues, the study designed an 11-session program focusing on four key domains: relationship-building, self-acceptance, acceptance of others, and self-assurance. Various edutech— including TUNING Editor, Canva, Papago, PictureThis, Blooket, ZEP, and AR content—were employed to support self-expression and collaborative learning in digital contexts. The program was applied with five first-grade students at an elementary school in Korea. The analysis of the qualitative data from observations, activity records, and interviews revealed notable improvements in the students’ self-awareness, peer relationships, and classroom participation. The participants showed increased confidence, a positive self-viewpoint, and greater engagement in expressing their thoughts during peer interactions. Although the study was limited by the absence of a control group, a small sample size, and a short implementation period, it provided empirical evidence of the feasibility and educational value of customized technology-integrated instruction for younger learners. The findings offer practical insights into supporting emotional development and school adjustment during the early years and will serve as a foundation for future curriculum development in digital-based socioemotional education.
