국내 대학생 아랍어 학습자의 학습동기와 학습노력에 관한 연구 - 제2언어 동기 자아, 국제적인 자세, 경쟁 변인을 중심으로

초록

제2언어 학습동기와 학습노력 및 학업성취도간에 밀접한 상호관계가있는 것으로 여겨진다. 이에 제2언어 교육 분야의 학자들은 학습자들의학습동기와 흥미를 연구하여 교과과정이나 교수법 혹은 교재 등에 반영하기 위해 다양한 노력을 기울여왔다. 제2언어 학습동기 연구의 초기에는 목표 언어권 문화에 통합되고자 하는 학습자의 열망에 기초한 ‘통합성(Gardner 1985)’개념을 중심으로 연구가 활발하게 이루어졌으나, 1990년대에 들어와 다수의 학자들이 학습동기의 개념을 재해석할 필요가 있음을 주장하기 시작했다. 제2언어 학습자의 학습동기는 타인이나 세계와의 상호작용을 통해 형성되고 변화되는 등, 맥락에 민감하고(Lamb 2007, 758) 역동적인 사회·문화적인 변인인데 ‘통합성’은 이러한 특성을 효과적으로 드러내기 어렵다는 인식(Dörnyei 2005)때문이었다. Dörnyei(2005; 2009)는 제2언어 학습동기의 복잡하고 맥락 의존적인특성을 설명하기 위해 심리학의 ‘자아(self)’ 개념을 차용하여 ‘제2언어동기적 자아 체계(L2 Motivational Self System)’를 구축했다. 이후 국내외에서 이 모델을 기반으로 다양한 실증연구가 이루어져 학습동기와 학습노력에 대한 설명력과 예측 가능성이 보다 강화되었다고 평가된다. 다만 동 모델에 기반 한 연구의 4분의 3 정도가 영어 학습자를 대상으로 이루어져(Mendoza & Phung 2018, 124) 영어 이외의 다양한 언어 학습자를 대상으로 한 연구가 더 활발하게 이루어져야 할 필요가 제기된다. ‘한국의 사회·교육적 환경에서 형성된 대학생 아랍어 학습자들의 학습동기는 그들의 학습노력에 어떤 영향을 끼칠까?’ 그간 국내에서 제2언어동기적 자아 체계를 이용해 대학생 아랍어 학습자들의 학습동기를 분석한 사례로는 공지현의 연구(2017)와 Kong 외의 연구(2018)가 있다. 첫번째 연구는 Dörnyei의 모델을 이용해 국내 아랍어 학습자들의 학습동기를 분석한 최초의 시도라는 의의가 있으나 한국의 사회·교육적 환경의 영향을 드러내 줄 수 있는 주요 동기 변인들을 분석대상에 포함하지 않았다. 두 번째는 이들 변인 중 일부인 ‘국제적인 자세(International posture)’와 ‘경쟁(Competitiveness)’을 고려했으나 아랍어 학습자와 스페인어 학습자를 동일 집단으로 분류해 함께 분석하였기에 아랍어 학습자들이 가지고 있는 고유한 특성을 확인하는데 한계를 보였다. 본 연구는 Dörnyei(2005; 2009)의 ‘제2언어 동기적 자아 체계’를 분석의 틀로 삼아 한국의 사회·교육적 환경에 영향을 받아 형성되었을 것으로 간주되는 한국인 대학생들의 아랍어 학습동기를 조사하여 그 특성을파악하고 교육적 함의를 도출하고자 한다. 이를 위해 ‘세계화’ 및 ‘국가경쟁력 강화’를 추구해 온 한국의 사회·교육적 환경에서 형성되어 아랍어학습동기에 영향을 끼칠 것으로 예상되는 ‘국제적인 자세’ 변인과 ‘경쟁’ 변인(Kong외의 연구 2018, 180-181 참고)을 연구 내용에 포함하여 다음과 같은 구체적인 연구 질문을 설정하겠다. 1) 국내 대학생 아랍어 학습자들의 ‘제2언어 자아’는 ‘학습노력’에 어떤 영향을 끼치는가? 2) ‘국제적인 자세’와 ‘경쟁’ 변인은 ‘학습노력’에 어떤 영향을 끼치는가? 3) ‘국제적인 자세’와 ‘경쟁’ 변인은 ‘제2언어 자아’에 어떤 영향을 끼치는가? 4) 질문 1), 2), 3)에 대한 조사결과가 의미하는 교육적 함의는 무엇인가? 본 연구는 이와 같은 질문에 대한 답을 찾아가는 과정으로 궁극적으로는 더 많은 학습자가 성공적인 아랍어 학습을 경험할 수 있는 아랍어 교육환경을 구축하는 데 일조하고자 한다.

Abstract

Motivation plays an important role in the second language learning. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of Arabic learners' motivation on their learning efforts, using Dörnyei's (2005; 2009) 'L2 Motivational Self System'. In particular, the study made an attempt to find out characteristics of Korean Arabic learners' motivation at the college level by observing two motivational variables, international posture and competitiveness, which were assumed to be influenced by Korean socio-educational environment. To this end, this study surveyed 150 Korean students studying Arabic at 5 Korean universities and revealed that ideal L2 self and competitiveness play an important role in strengthening the learning efforts of Korean Arabic learners, whereas ought-to L2 self and international posture do not. The study provided pedagogical implications based on these key findings.
