City Diplomacy of the Local Governments Between Korea and Türkiye: Based on analysis and suggestions for the current situation over the past half century

Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1957, Korea and Türkiye have achieved remarkable development in various fields including politics, economy, society, and culture. In parallel, city diplomacy, a relatively new term that refers to exchanges between local governments of the two countries, has also developed significantly thanks to the diplomatic power of the central government. The purpose of this article is to analyze the current status of city diplomacy over the past half century since 1971, when friendly exchanges between local governments of the two countries first began. Chapter Ⅰ of this paper explains the background and purpose of the study, Chapter Ⅱ examines the concept of city diplomacy, and Chapter Ⅲ examines the types of city diplomacy. Chapter Ⅳ, which is the core of the paper, examines the current situation of city diplomacy between the two countries and the structural characteristics of this. Finally, Chapter V concludes the implications identified from the review of the two countries’ city diplomacy and concludes with several suggestions for the its’ sustainable development. This article is significant in that it is the first paper in Korea to analyze the evolution of city diplomacy conducted by local governments between Korea and Türkiye.
