Metaphors for the Translator: The Long Road Travelled from Craftsmen to Experts, Networkers and Service Providers

본 논문은 번역사가 지속적으로 작업해왔던 은유의 양상을 역사적으로 살펴본다. 이로써, 문화 간 교류에 있어 번역사의 지위와 역할에 대하여 탐구한다. 더 나아가, 현재 사용되는 은유의 새로운 특성을 기존의 것과 함께 관찰함으로써, 은유가 작금의 번역작업에 일으키는 변화의 지평을 지적하고자 한다. 역사적으로 번역사의 작업은 은유의 그것이다. 그러나 시대와 언어이론적 기반에 근거한 은유작업이라는 점에서 시인의 작업과 다르다. 현대에 들어, 번역자의 은유는 현대매체기술 및 환경의 변화에 따라, 언어의 서비스 공급자, 하위공급자, 추가적인 간섭요인과 복잡한 소통의 네트워크에 의해 재매개되고 있다. 번역가는 A, B 언어간의 내적인 공동의미를 찾는데 있어서 이러한 환경을 고려할 것을 요구받고 있는 것이다. 따라서 은유적 활동의 전통적인 변화(번역가의 전통)가 번역이론을 이끄는 것이 아니라 번역의 새로운 이론이 은유의 작업 혹은 번역가를 만들어내는 것이다. 이것이 후기 산업시대와 기술중점 시대의 요구이다. 단순한 번역자의 시대는 지나고 이제 번역가는 이론 및 실제의 융합적인 능력을 요구받는다. 번역적 메타언어의 요구가 광범위하게 벌어지는 시대에 들어, 은유의 작업자(즉, 번역가)가 은유가 지녀야 할 당대의 공동의미의 근거를 잃어 버리면 번역언어의 생명은 매우 짧다고 할 것이다.
