Abstract
This study measured the trade status of the fisheries industry in China, a major exporter and importer of the fisheries industry, from 2010 to 2020 using gross trade and value-added trade statistics, and further analyzed the international competitiveness of the Chinese fisheries industry both globally and by country. The international competitiveness of the Chinese fisheries industry was measured and evaluated using indices such as revealed comparative advantage (RCA), the trade specialization index (TSI), and the market comparative advantage (MCA). For empirical study, we used Inter-Country Input-Output tables (ICIO) from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released in 2023. The main implications are summarized as follows. First, policymakers should use value-added trade to assess the trade status of China's fisheries industry. Second, in the world market, gross trade data underestimates the international competitiveness of China's fisheries industry compared to value-added trade data. Finally, based on the bilateral international competitiveness of China’s fisheries industry through MCA and TSI, policymakers need to pay attention to six countries for China’s fisheries industry growth: Russia, Vietnam, Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and India.
