Abstract

This study analyzed the fisheries’trade structure and international competitiveness of Korea and major countries in terms of value added by using WWZ (2013) total export decomposition and WWYZ (2016) gross production decomposition methods. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows. First, the share of domestic value added (DVA) is decreasing and the share of foreign value added (FVA) is increasing in Korea 's total Fishing and Aquaculture Industry exports. Second, as a result of analyzing the value-added trade structure of Fishing and Aquaculture Industries, domestic value added in Korea's total fishery exports is 82.2%; 25.8% of Korea's value added through exports is derived from exports to Russia, followed by the US with 20.4%, Japan with 15.4%, Taiwan with 2.8%, China with 1.2%, and the proportion of the top five countries reached 65.6%. Third, as a result of measuring the international competitiveness based on the added value of fisheries, Norway 's NRCA index showed the highest competitiveness at 5.98, followed by Indonesia (4.17), India (2.13), and China (1.76). On the other hand, in Korea, both the RCA index (0.13) and NRCA (0.64) index showed a declining trend and the comparative disadvantage is increasing. Finally, the export contribution of fishery GDP was highest in Norway with 72.0%, while Canada and Korea were 47.92% and 40.14%, respectively. On the other hand, the share of GDP in Korea's GDP decreased from 0.38% in 2000 to 0.21% in 2014. In conclusion, the international competitiveness in Korean fisheries and the contribution rate of GDP are showing a sharp decline. Therefore, in order to secure international competitiveness of the Korean fisheries industry, it is necessary to promote the knowledge industrialization of the fisheries industry and seek export strategies from the perspective of global value chains.
