Abstract

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the role of aerobic exercise and its underlying mechanism on the improvement of blood pressure. Aerobic exercise for 1 hour per day, 2 to 3 times a week for 10 weeks decreased %body fat, diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate in female pre-hypertensives. A significant increase of ROS production and a decrease of catalase expression were found in H2O2 treatment-induced senescent HUVECs. Interestingly, the increase of ROS production was suppressed in the cell group pre-treated with shear stress. However, the effect of shear stress was disappeared when SIRT1 expression was inhibited. It was also found that the increase of ROS production following H2O2 exposure was suppressed even in the cell group pre-treated with resveratrol, a SIRT1 activator. In this study, it was verified that the aerobic exercise-induced enhanced SIRT1 expression can play a positive role in the improvement of blood pressure partly by suppressing ROS production in vascular endothelial cells.
