동아시아 地政文化는 성립하는가? ―‘동양사’의 출현과 근대 일본

오늘날 동양사는 학과로서는 중국을 중심으로 한 한국, 근대 이전의 베트남 등 중국과 그 주변지역을 상정한 지역 범위라고 이해될지도 모른다. 나아가 동양은 ‘아시아’의 한자표현으로서 서양과 대조되는 오리엔트와 같은 의미라고 하는 견해도 성립될 수 있다. 이들 ‘동양사’에서 ‘일본’이나 ‘일본사’가 어떤 조건에서는 동양에 포함되기도 하고, 어떤 조건에서는 거기에 포함되지는 않았는데 앞의 논문에서는 이에 관한 문제들을 역사적으로 고찰해 본 것이다. 1990년대 이후 글로벌화의 물결에 따라, 그리고 무엇보다도 아시아의 ‘내재적’인 전개에 따라 지금까지 지리적으로 고정된 ‘아시아’가 복합적인 아시아나 열린 아시아 나아가서는 민간의 아시아 등으로 나타나게 되었다. 그러한 상황에서 현재의 아시아에 관한 논의가 그 전제로서 가지는 역사적 연속성 가운데의 아시아적 다이너미즘을 지금까지 논의되어 온 아시아관·아시아 이미지·아시아론 등을 되돌아보면서 ‘가시화’시킬 필요가 있다. 그리고 그 출발점에서의 논의로 19세기 말부터 일본에서 새로운 아시아 이해의 ‘학문’이라고 표방된 ‘동양사’라고 하는 틀과 관련된 논의를 살펴보고 싶다. 1990년대 말에 王恩涌·王正毅 등은 ‘地縁政治論’을 제안하고 내셔널과 글로벌의 사이를 잇는 ‘광역지역론’, ‘중심-주변론’을 구상하였다. 白永瑞는 한국인의 시각으로부터 중국사에서 아시아론의 존재여부를 묻고, 또 일본에서 ‘동양사’의 역사적인 의미를 추구하였다. 그와는 달리 일본 지식인은 대체로 내셔널에 중첩시킨 지역론을 여전히 유지하고 있는 것 같다. 이 3자의 서로 다른 지역론은 사실은 ‘地域’이 ‘知域’이라는 것을 여실히 나타내고 있다고 할 수 있다. 거기에는 ‘아시아 知’를 공동으로 창출한다고 하는 인문과제에 대한 도전이 요청되고 있다. 아시아의 문제를 지금 생각해 볼 때 ‘知域’에 대응한 인문거점이 창설되어, 상호간에 대화를 시도함으로써 ‘知域’뿐만 아니라 ‘知域’을 넘어서는 지식기반사회의 네트워크가 형성되는 근거가 만들어질 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.
Abstract
It seems that the term 'Asia' is now more widespread than that of the 'Orient'. What is found common in a variety of concepts of the Orient, however, is that Orient was "created" in order to relativize China, and that "Japan" or "Japanese history" was not included in it. A concept of the Orient, including Japan, as a geographical and cultural boundary has been severed from Japanese history in that an academic field of Japanese history as national history was formed separately from that of Oriental history in modern Japan. In accordance with the wave of globalization since 1990s, and more importantly with the "internal" development of Asia, geographically fixed "Asia" is now transformed into mixed Asia, open Asia, or even the people's Asia. In such circumstances, further discussions over Asia should make Asian dynamism, which has been articulated in previous views and discourses on Asia and varied images of Asia, visible. I, as a beginning to such discussions, want to examine previous discussions over the form of "Oriental history[東洋史]", which emerged as "a new field of study" to understand Asia in late nineteenth‐century Japan. Discourses on Asia connecting global with national are both old and new issues, which should be currently reconsidered. This is an intellectual issue on Asia, suggested by Yamamuro Shinich(山室信一), as well as a political and economic issue on Asia in actuality. In these circumstances, 地緣政治論[geo‐politics or political geography], suggested by Wang Enyong(王恩涌) and Wang Zhengyi(王正毅) in late 1990s, is mapping out the theory of "macroregionalism" and "center‐periphery" in order to bridge a gap between national and global. Paek Yǒngsǒ(白永瑞), from a Korean point of view, questioned whether or not discourses on Asia existed in Chinese history and also searched for a historical meaning of Oriental history in Japan. Unlike them, Japanese intellectuals seem to still maintain a regionalism overlapping with national. These three different theoretical approaches possibly show that regions[地域] are in fact "the knowledge of regions[知域]". What is now demanded in the humanities is challenges to an issue to construct "Asian 知[knowledge]" together.
