Abstract

The university is presently a central institution of the modern world-system, and has been at least since the nineteenth century. The most important formal change was to divide the erstwhile Faculty of Philosophy in historic European universities into at least two, often more, faculties. This revised university structure reflected a basic shift in the epistemological premises of the pursuit of knowledge. Long phase of reconstructing the university ended more or less in 1945, at which point today began. The period I am calling today ran more or less from 1945 to 2000. It actually had two parts. The first was marked by the overwhelming triumph of science. The second, on the contrary, was marked by a major counterattack against science in the name of "culture". The turning-point between the two was the world revolution of 1968. After 1945 , the most relevant consequence was the equally incredible expansion of university institutions. Those that already existed grew in size. And many, many new ones were created. Whereas in 1945, the majority of the world's universities were located in Western countries, new ones were created not only in these countries but in the rest of the world. The post-1968 changes : the rise of neo-liberalism, the budgetary squeezes. The "high-school-ization" of the university all contributed to an increased ability of the states to put effective pressure on the universities to observe the positions and priorities of the states. Tomorrow is always uncertain, even when it has already begun. Basically, there are two possibilities. One is that the universities of the world will seize this occasion to play a central role in the epistemological debate and therefore in the political debate. Or they will not. The epistemological debate will continue, as will the political debate. But it will move outside the universities. The creation of the modern world-system was a great shock to the structures that had existed before and that we called universities. On the other hand, this is a situation that is wide open. This is surely a more noble role than becoming moribund. But it is a role that demands hard intellectual work, deep moral soul-searching,
