본 논문은 동양학의 직접 연구대상이 되는 동양, 동방, 동아 개념의 유래와 사상적 함의를 분석함으로써 이에 내재된 문제점을 드러내는 동시에 동아시아가 공유하고 있는 문화 사상적 가치를 밝힘으로써 21세기 새로운 동양학 정립 가능성과 발전 방향을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 동양은 전근대시기 중국의 천하관을 기반으로 하고 있는 개념으로 당시 동아시아에서 통용되었던 조공체계나 화이질서, 천조체제론 등은 이와 동일한 맥락으로 설명 가능하다. 반면 동방 개념은 동아시아 자신이 아닌 타자에 의해 형성된 개념으로, 근대 유럽을 중심으로 한 서구의 식민지화 정책과 맞물려 형성되었다. 이 시기 형성된 동방학의 내용을 통해 보았을 때, 서구가 말하는 동방 개념은 크게 역사주의와 영토 확장주의의 두 가지 영역에서 오류를 범하고 있다. 한편 동아 개념은 식민주의 시대 일본이 열강의 위치에 오르게 되면서 일본을 중심으로 재정립된 동양 개념과 함께 형성된 개념으로, 실제로는 일본 영토 확장주의의 대상을 지칭한다. 이처럼 동양, 동방, 동아 개념은 전근대적 조공체계나 근대 식민주의의 지배와 피지배 관계가 더 이상 적용되지 않는 21세기 동아시아 사회에 부합하지 않는다. 따라서 21세기의 동양학은 이전까지 동양, 동방, 동아에 관한 논의와는 다른 시각으로 접근되어야만 한다. 세계 제2차 대전의 종결로 포스트 식민주의 시대가 열리면서 아시아 각국은 이러한 문제의식을 갖게 되었지만, 유럽중심주의, 패권주의로부터의 독립을 우선시하면서 문화적 국가주의라는 보수적인 형태의 움직임으로 이어질 수밖에 없다. ‘셀프 오리엔탈리즘’이나 과거 중화주의로의 회기 현상은 이러한 문화적 자국주의의 일환으로 윤리적 책임의 은폐와 왜곡, 타문화를 향한 배타성, 폭력성 등의 폐단으로 이어지기 쉽다는 점에서 매우 위험하다. 동양학이 동아시아 모두의 공동 번영과 평화를 추구하는 ‘범아시아주의(Pan-Asianism)’나 ‘새로운 동양학(Re-Orientalism)’으로 나아가기 위해서는 동아시아 유학이 지닌 윤리적 가치나 실제 효용성 등의 잠재적 역량을 발현시키는 동시에, 유학의 발전을 가로막는 기원론적 관점의 연구방식에서 벗어나야만 한다.
Abstract
This article aims to present the potentialities for the re-conceptualization of East Asian studies in the 21st century. To reach this purpose, this paper reveals the origin of the concepts of Dongyang (東洋), Dongbang (東方), and Dong-a (東亞). Dongyang is a concept based on the world view of pre-modern China, a sinocentric tribute diplomacy system of international relations enforced by Imperial China in East Asia, and the system of the Celestial Imperial Court (天朝), which can be explained in the same context. On the other hand, the Dongfang concept was brought in by representatives of Western colonial policy as a foreign perspective on East Asia. From the perspective of the Eastern Asian studies that formed during this period, the concept of Dongfang is largely errant in two fields: historicism and territorial expansionism. Lastly, Dong-a was formed together with the Dongyang concept, which was re-established by Japan when Imperial Japan turned into a colonial ruler during the colonial era, thus it actually refers to Japanese territorial expansionism. Since the concepts of pre-modern tribute system or the relationship between domination and subjugation of modern colonialism no longer applies to East Asian society in the 21st century, the concepts discussed above, i.e. Dongyang, Dongfang and Dong-a, cannot be in line with the current situation in East Asia. East Asia studies in the 21st century must be approached from a different perspective than the previous discussions on Dongyang, Dongfang and Dong-a. With the end of World War Ⅱ, the post-colonial era had begun, thereupon Asian countries also became aware of this problem. However, they prioritized their independence from European centralism or hegemonism and ended up with a conservative form of cultural nationalism. As one part of cultural nationalism, self-orientalism or the regression toward Sino-centralism can be very risky, as it is likely to lead to concealment and distortion of ethical responsibility, exclusiveness toward other cultures, or violence. For re-conceptualization of East Asian studies in the 21st century, which seeks common prosperity and peace in East Asia, the potential capabilities of Confucianism, such as ethical values and actual effectiveness on society, need to be demonstrated. At the same time, it must methodologically deviate from a genetic approach of the study.
