Abstract
This study aims to explore prospective English teachers’ patterns and perceptions of English grammar learning using extensive reading-based noticing. For this purpose, for 10 weeks in the second semester of 2023, 18 students majoring in English education at a four-year university in Seoul were asked to do extensive reading, select their own grammatical features from the reading texts, take notice of their usages in the context, and write their reflections in learning journals every week. The journals were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, in order to explore their perceptions of this method, a questionnaire survey was conducted at the 14th week and their answers were analysed quantitatively. As for the grammatical features that they took notice of, the grammatical features related with verb(e.g., tense, aspect, participle, passive voice, infinitive, and gerund) accounted for 49.44% of total noticing cases. It was found that their noticing-based learning patterns were various, and that there was little difficulty in the learning method in general, and they found the method useful to improve their English grammar competence.
