Abstract
Background: Recent progress of fully autonomous cars makes us believe that they are going to arrive in our lives earlier than expected. Fully autonomous cars do not need human drivers. It changes a lot in terms of interior design of cars. A lot of innovative design emerge to demonstrate interior design of fully autonomous cars in the future. However, we observe fewer design challenges to show how those cars look from exterior in view of pedestrians and human drivers. It is important that pedestrians and human drivers are able to notice driverless cars and interact with them. Using emoticons is one of the ways to help road users in this context. We assumed that emoticons engage people and appear to be more friendly. Thus, we hoped that fully autonomous cars with interactive emoticons exterior will help increase the technology acceptance of road users. Methods: In this study, we tested two design concepts: One design without emoticons, the other integrating animated emoticons. To evaluate the difference in designers' perception of the characteristics of both design concepts, 61 designers or design-related practitioners/students were recruited by snowball sampling. Two sets of 16 bi-polar adjectives of semantic-differential scale relevant to each design were presented to respondents on the on-line survey form. All respondents evaluated both design alternatives in the same order. Analysis is done on two aspects: the significance of the difference in the evaluation of two design alternatives by applying emoticons and the factor analysis of sixteen pairs of adjectives. Result: The results indicated that eight pairs of bi-polar adjectives are dependent on the design alternatives. It was found that the design with emoticons was perceived differently(excited, elegant, dynamic, soft, contemporary, futuristic, feminine, light). Conclusion: We can conclude that the results show that emoticons helped intriguing and assuring people on accepting the new technology with artificial intelligence.
