Abstract

This study explores the relationship between user perception and socio-cultural factors in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, and their impact on the interior design of fully autonomous vehicles(FAVs, Level 5). Despite the current unavailability of FAVs for consumers, much research has been conducted based on users’ imaginations and expectations. However, to gain a deeper understanding of user perceptions, this study applied Ajzen’s Expanded Theory of Planned Behavior and went a step further by comparing users’ concrete thinking about conventional vehicles(CVs) and abstract thinking about FAVs in relation to non-driving related tasks(NDRTs). An online survey was conducted with 130 conventional vehicle owners in South Korea, and the results were analyzed using a variety of statistical methods, including frequency analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and chi-square analysis. The data was processed through IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 to identify potential target groups and design directions for the interior of FAVs. The study found that the tendency to perceive cars as a living space that balances privacy and connection for individuals within society has increased. Through cluster analysis of participants’ needs for NDRTs in FAVs, the study identified three distinct design directions for three different target groups: the “hyperactive type,” the “introversion type,” and the “conservative type.” These findings provide design directions for the interior of FAVs for each target group, emphasizing the importance of considering not only demographic factors but also individual psychology and propensity. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that a human-centered approach will be crucial in promoting the uptake and integration of FAVs into society. This approach will play a key role in ensuring that the technology is embraced by users and considered an integral part of their daily lives. The insights from this research provide valuable information for designers and researchers in the field of future mobility and underline the need for a design-first approach to the development of FAVs.
