Abstract

Background: Although the technology to enable driverless cars is nearly ready, people's mind may not be. Designers must start by empathizing with people to understand the causes of their concern to define real problems to be solved. We share insights on exactly who are the most concerned and what kind of concerns they have. Methods: We reviewed previous researches done worldwide within last 5 years. They reveal general opinions of people on fully autonomous cars. We surveyed with common set of questions from the previous studies and by adding lifestyle factors needed for further analysis. Our survey was composed of questions on general opinion of their perception of the autonomous car technology, expectations and concerns and then the respondents' profile such as age, gender, number of family members living together, level of education, and whether they got their licenses to drive. Result: There exist significant differences in acceptance of fully autonomous cars by gender. Females concerned more on the frequency and the severity of accidents as well as unexpected situations. Also, females fear for the big-sized vehicles such as semi trucks and delivery cars. The older millennial group and the ones who had bachelor's degree were different to other groups in the case of unexpected situations and the willingness to use. Conclusion: This research needs to be followed by defining right definition of personas that are going to benefit dramatically from fully autonomous cars. There mights be a key to design interior of fully autonomous cars by considering females so that they can have assuring information displayed with the relevant guidelines on how to behave on unexpected situations.
