Abstract

Background : Due to the spread of COVID-19, the running culture has become more active as people in their 20s and 30s who value their personal health participate in running. With the influx of young people, online crew culture is actively emerging, and the trend of running culture and runners are becoming gradually diverse. However, most running services in the market suffer from the limitation that they provide uniform running services despite the diversified user base, resulting in low user engagement. Therefore, this study aims to propose a customized running service concept by analyzing user’s design needs based on the Persuasive Systems Design (PSD) theory. Methods : The service applicability of PSD was reviewed through case studies of running services and analysis of prior researches about PSD. Afterward, a user experience survey was conducted to collect data for analysis. Based on user experience data, qualitative coding and PSD matrix analysis were conducted, and PSD principles requirements and core functions for each running user group were derived . To propose a specific service, a PSD-based personalized running service concept was developed through persona, user flow, and scenario, and expert verification was conducted to review the suitability of the service. Results : As a result, the novice runner group required principles such as Reduction and Personalization, and needed role-assisting functions to support continuous running. In the casual runner group, the principles of Tailoring, Liking and Social facilitation were required to support personalized content creation and to feel social recognition and a sense of achievement with other users. Lastly, the serious runner group were highly motivated by principles such as Goal-Setting and Expertise, which led to the need for functions that support running crew activities and improve competitions and personal records. Conclusion : This study proposed a personalized running service concept based on PSD that targets various user groups. Based on the PSD principles shown in each user group, the service concept proposed by in this study prevents users from leaving the service and provides a running experience optimized for each individual user by providing the customized function at each stage.
