Abstract

Based on evidence-based information, interventions to promote physical activity have been implemented in individual and population levels. Further academic and market areas have recently paid attention to intervention strategies using mobile devices. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview existing intervention studies and technologies applied to the interventions to promote physical activity using mobile applications that would be a key element for building a healthy campus. This study introduces intervention strategies which are based on a health promotion model and mobile technologies and examples of intervention using mobile applications to promote physical activity. Moreover systematic reviews that examined the effects of mobile application applied interventions also are reviewed. The current trend of mobile technologies has emphasized the application of a persuasive technology which is based on a context recognition in which physical activities occur and has utilized users’ physical activity patterns or profiles using location based information for physical activity intervention strategies. When using mobile application for physical activity promotion, it is important to understand complex interactions within an ecological environment including intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, and population levels. Also, it is critical to optimize a burden regarding the advanced technology area. The biggest challenge for a physical activity intervention using mobile applications would be resolving a feasibility issue on data collecting of personal-level information and securing an involvement of multidisciplinary experts and stakeholders and their cooperation for the development and assessment of the intervention.
