Abstract
‘Chin(親)’ is widely known as a prefix that is attached to nouns of kinship relationships, such as Chinbumo(parents) and Chinhalmuni(grandmother), meaning ‘blood relatives’. However, there are differing opinions on whether Chinjungbu(Government of the Republic of Korea) and Chinhuanjing(Friendly to the surroundings) should be considered prefixes. In addition, it is questionable whether ‘chin(親)’ in words such as Nanxichin(A kinship in which blood descent is passed down through males) and Beishuchin(Relatives belonging to the line below the son) can be considered suffixes. To this end, we introduce the concept of ‘semi-suffix’ to compare the characteristics of suffixes and semi-suffixes, thereby finding the differences between the two. As a prefix, ‘chin(親)-’ is actively used in the formation process of Korean derivatives due to its high productivity. As a prefix in the dependent form, ‘chin(親)-’ acquires the meaning of indicating a certain kinship relationship by combining with kinship nouns. This paper focuses on this and examines the meaning of the prefix ‘chin(親)-’ while comparing it with other prefixes indicating kinship (degree of kinship) such as ‘si(媤)-’, ‘saeng(生)-’, ‘yang(養)-’, and ‘oe(外)-’ to examine what semantic or functional similarities and differences there are between these prefixes. Through this work, we will be able to confirm the characteristics and usage of the prefix ‘chin(親)-’. In addition, this paper will examine the aspects of the formation of Korean derivative words and their semantic and functional characteristics of the semi-prefix ‘chin(親)-’ and the semi-suffix ‘chin(親)-’. Through the above, we will observe not only the semantic but also the morphological relationship of the root or stem that combines with ‘chin(親)’ to find the structural commonalities of words containing ‘chin(親)’ and study the formation patterns of words containing ‘chin(親)’.
