申龜鉉과 『歷代朝鮮女流詩歌選』 一考察

申龜鉉의 『歷代朝鮮女流詩歌選』은 역대 여성 인물의 시를 네 가지 선정 기준으로 선집한 시선집이다. 그는 여성 문학을 단순히 특수 계층의 산물로 간주하지 않고, 조선 문학의 일면으로서 본질적 가치를 지닌다고 보았다. 그는 여성들이 억압된 환경 속에서도 자신의 감정과 삶을 문학적으로 표현한 점을 높이 평가하며, 이들의 작품이 사회적·역사적 배경을 반영한 중요한 자료임을 강조했다. 이 책의 시 선별 과정에서 신구현은 현대적 의의, 여성 일반의 성격, 역사적·사회적 맥락, 작가의 개성을 기준으로 삼아 작품을 선정하였다. 그는 한시 원문과 더불어 한글 번역도 함께 제공하여 독자들의 이해를 돕고자 했으며, 이 과정에서 번역의 한계와 오류 가능성을 남겨두었다. 부록으로 각 인물의 전기와 작품의 참고 문헌을 표로 정리하여 실었다. 신구현은 여성 인물을 ‘규수’와 ‘기첩’으로 분류하여 살펴보았다. 규수는 제한된 공간과 사회적 억압 속에서 감정적이고 내면적인 시를 남긴 반면, 기첩은 복잡한 사회적 관계와 현실 경험을 바탕으로 현실적이고 생동감 있는 작품을 창작했다고 하였다. 그동안 많은 종의 한시 선집이 간행·출판되었지만, 『역대조선여류시가선』은 그 중에서도 여성의 한시만을 모아 한문 원문과 한글 번역을 함께 실었고, 뒤에 작자의 정보 및 출전들을 정리하여 일반 독자들이 시뿐만 아니라 작자의 삶도 함께 이해할 수 있도록 해설을 덧붙여 놓은 것에 편찬 의의가 있다. 본 연구에서는 신구현의 생애와 학술적 활동을 바탕으로 『역대조선여류시가선』이 가진 문학사적 의의를 재조명하고, 이 책이 1930년대 조선 문학과 여류 시문학 연구에 끼친 영향을 고찰하였다.
Abstract
Yeokdae Joseon Yeoryu Sigaseon』(Anthology of Joseon Women’s Poetry Through the Ages) by Shin Gu-hyeon(1912~?) is a collection of women’s poetry selected based on four criteria. Shin did not view women’s literature as merely a product of a specific social class but regarded it as an essential aspect of Joseon literature, possessing intrinsic value. He particularly appreciated the way women expressed their emotions and lives through literary means despite oppressive environments, emphasizing that their works serve as significant records reflecting their social and historical background. During the selection process, Shin Gu-hyeon chose 206 poems based on their modern significance, the characteristics of usual women, historical and social background, and the characteristics of the authors. He provided both the original Chinese texts and Korean translations to aid readers’ understanding, however, remained the limitations and potential errors in translation. The appendix includes biographical information about the authors and references to their works in a table. Shin categorized the female authors of poetic literature into “kisaeng” and “gyusu”, emphasizing the differences in their literary creations. Gyusu composed emotional and introspective poetry within confined spaces and under social oppression, whereas gisaeng produced realistic and vivid works inspired by complex social interactions and their experiences. Although numerous anthologies of classical Chinese poetry have been compiled and published, Yeokdae Joseon Yeoryu Sigaseon stands out by focusing exclusively on women’s poetry, presenting the original classical Chinese texts with Korean translations, and offering detailed commentary on the authors’ lives and the sources of their works. This study examines the historical value of Yeokdae Joseon Yeoryu Sigaseon with the life of Shin Gu-hyeon and his academic contributions. Furthermore, it explores the impact of this anthology on the study of Joseon literature and women’s poetry researches in the 1930s.
