Abstract
This study aims to examine the formal and thematic characteristics evident in Chojongjip(草亭集, The Collected Works of Chojong), a compilation of writings by Kim Seong-Gyu(金星圭, 1863~ 1936), which serves as a case study illustrating the transformations in Sino-Korean writing during the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The writing practices of the literati, who were born in the late 19th century and remained active into the 20th century, reflect various stylistic changes in line with contemporary societal shifts, as well as content that mirrors these transformations. This paper specifically investigates the texts contained in Chojongjip to trace changes in Sino-Korean writing and examine the trajectory of Kim Seong-Gyu’s life and intellectual concerns. To this end, the study analyzes diverse literary styles in Chojongjip to explore diachronic changes in textual representation from the late 19th to the early 20th century. By focusing on expository writings, the study seeks to capture the shifts in Kim’s perceptions of his era, spanning from the 1880s to the late 1910s. In terms of format, the study closely examines official documents, diaries, clan records, and wills. After the Gabo Reforms(甲午更張), official documents began to adopt the hybrid SinoKorean orthography, while personal writings retained the Classical Chinese style. However, this orthographic trend gradually transitioned towards a more modern mixed-script style in the 20th century. Similarly, diary entries – initially written in Classical Chinese – adopted mixed-script formats, though their descriptive methods continued to exclude personal opinions in line with traditional practices. The clan records of the Andong Kim family, to which Kim Seong-Gyu belonged, constitute a significant portion of Chojongjip. These include a variety of writings such as legal petitions, which are characterized by repeated references to capital-related matters. The wills recorded in the compilation also exhibit traces of traditional admonitory practices but are mediated through the new literary form of wills. These documents showcase diverse orthographic styles, ranging from Classical Chinese to Hyeontoche and mixed-script. Additionally, the study identifies supplementary aspects such as the inclusion of speeches in the collection and the transformation of poetic societies, in which Kim played a pivotal role. Regarding content, Kim Seong-Gyu’s writings from the 1880s reveal a tendency to acquire new knowledge and advocate for social reform. However, during his career as a government official, he witnessed impoverished livelihoods, dissatisfaction with government directives, and widespread bureaucratic corruption. After resigning from public office, he prioritized practical measures such as promoting agriculture and establishing schools to emphasize education, rather than advocating for macro-level social change. Simultaneously, he expressed an appreciation for traditional spiritual values and viewed the people as passive entities, revealing a multiplicity of perspectives in his writings beyond their formal characteristics.
