Abstract
Generally, the flow of civilization exchange does not show consistency across time in the definition of its type. In this regard, Sicily was no exception. However, if there is a difference, the first is that, if the one period is excluded, it is defined as one consistent type from ancient times to the present day. The second is that the exceptional type of exchange shows a change in relationship opposite to that of the times before and after it. The Sicilian history has been a laboratory for cultural exchanges of various types. This paper analyzes the history from the 9th century to the 13th century, which can be defined as a type of 'Interaction', in the history of Sicily, which has already been dominated by the exchange types of 'Overlapping' and ' relationship in which only one side continues to lose' since ancient times. This period was a time to confirm the dynamism of Sicily's history, and furthermore, it was in line with the effort to understand the timeless 'multi-racial, multicultural global identity of the Mediterranean civilization'. The period from the 9th to the 13th century in the Sicilian Medieval history, the two different periods before and after this, can be defined as a form of Civilization Exchange that is different from the common meaning of ‘Overlapping’. The history of Muslim Sicily coincides with the formation of an ‘Open Area’ that runs through Andalusia, Sicily and Jerusalem. During this period Sicily was incorporated into a vast Muslim civilization linking the Mediterranean-Middle East-Indian Ocean and Sicily's cultural mobility recorded the greatest change in politics, economy and culture. In this sense the era of Muslim Sicily can be interpreted as the meaning of ‘Mutual Beneficial Relationship’ for both Muslims and Sicilian residents. The Norman Sicily period was established against the background of the history of Muslim Sicily. Norman was from northern Europe and built an independent kingdom between European Christian civilization and Middle East-African civilization. During this period, the administrative, institutional, cultural, and economic levels of the ruled were relatively high. For this reason, for the Norman rulers, the construction of a kingdom meant maintaining and developing the existing elements of civilization based on their ‘reciprocal comprehension’. The rule of Sicily by the German Emperor family is also well reflected in Frederick II's orientation to a ‘Universal Empire’. Although he was the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, his attachment to the Kingdom of Sicily was unusual. Frederick II's idea of a universal empire was closely related to the multiracial global identity of the Kingdom of Sicily. Religiously, racially and culturally, his universal empire was oriented toward a balance between the various cultural factors existing in Sicily. The core of the values pursued in this study can be found in a multiracial global society. The identity factor of globality, even in the case of the Mediterranean, has already been formed since ancient times. Only the degree and stage of development were different from now. The solution to the global coexistence paradigm we are facing can be found in history. This is the reason and justification that the history of civilization exchange in Sicily is recalled to the necessity of our time.
