Abstract
The history of ancient and medieval Sicily can be defined as a relation structure of ‘Amensalism’ with the macroscopic point of view of civilizational exchanges. Amensalism is a biological term that refers to a relationship in which the benefit of one side and the loss of the other persist among the various relations structures of coexistence. Conversely, the relationship between two benefiting each other is a ‘Mutualism’ in the Civilizational Exchanges. The background of Sicilian history, marked by a composition of Amensalism, can be found in the following facts. First, it is because the geopolitical position was of absolute importance in the trade and trade activities of the Mediterranean. Second, it is located at the boundary of the Mediterranean Sea, which separates eastern and western part of Mediterranean(the meaning of ‘Closed Sea’) and at the same time connects (the meaning of ‘Opened Sea’). Third, it was possible to supply enough water and food necessary for sailing in the Mediterranean. In addition, although residents of various origins lived in Sicily, the fact that independent political forces were not formed between them could be pointed out as the reason for the formation of a ‘Amensalism Type’ of Civilizational Exchanges in relation to external forces. ‘Amensalism Type’ of Civilizational Exchanges has not been revealed only as a single consistent flow in Sicily's history. In detail, there were multilateral civilization exchanges before the establishment of the Roman Empire and later diversity-based civilizations exchanges, dominant-dominated type of civilization exchanges under the Germanic rule, Interaction Type of Civilization Exchange in the era of Islam and the Norman-Hohenstaufen Family, and ‘Overlapping Type’ of Civilization Exchange since the mid-13th century. In analyzing ‘Amensalism Type’ of Civilizational Exchanges of the ancient and medieval Sicily, the criterion was the complementary of relational interactions and the intervention of mediation factors. In particular, in relation to the latter, mediation factor was set as a factor that changes the politics and ideological limitations faced by the existing historical reality, as well as a factor that changes the civilization paradigm of the times. The study on the ‘Amensalism Type’ of Civilizational Exchanges in Sicily is related to that the Mediterranean is a global society of multi- racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious, from ancient times to today. And also, the application of a new perspective and efforts to reinterpret this are closely related to the modern implications of multi-cultural globality.
