Abstract

Under this thesis, a contemplation is given on the style of journey by maritime people who traveled around the East Asian sea territories around the 9th century by paying attention to the diplomatic document of Jipsa-seong (the Chancellery Office of Silla) of Silla in 836 AD with its full context listed on 『Shoku Nihon Kōki』, and a discussion is made on the background requested for the so-called the ‘voyage permission document’ guideline when people traveled beyond international domain. First of all, in Chapter 1, it introduces a number of copy of the document of Jipsa-seong and presents the calibrated main context and annotation. Furthermore, the status pf the maritime people, such as, ‘people of islands’, ‘Baeksurang (means sea men)’ and others, that are issues within the applicable documents has been learned, and it has pointed out the voyage trend at the time where the carriage of ‘official document’ is required. Next, in Chapter 2, the active trend of international movement of the merchants in the 9th century is confirmed through various data, and contemplation is made on the cases that attached documents in voyage. And, in order to find out the detailed types and contents of the voyage permission documents, it is intended to approach to the status at the time through analyzing the ancient documents of the 9th century that are handed down to the present time. Lastly, in Chapter 3, the characteristics displayed in its voyage status has been found out with the attention given to the livelihood group other than the international merchants (maritime trader) as shown earlier. Based on the foregoing, the possibility of prevalent forgery on the voyage permission documents and government seal (official seal) is discussed. At this time, a comparative review is undertaken with the cases of later generations where the relative data for later times of Heian Era and Medieval Era, and others is prevalent in a way of approaching to the appearance of the time.
