Abstract

This paper aims to reconstruct the establishment and subsequent development of the yinyang doctrine within ancient China’s theory of natural calamity. In early Chinese texts, yinyang were long regarded merely as natural phenomena. By the time of the Guoyu, however, yinyang were explained as mutually opposing yet complementary vital forces, and a schema took shape in which the occurrence of natural calamities depends on the movement and harmonization of these two forces. Thereafter, by the late Warring States, employing yinyang to account for natural change became the most powerful way to explain natural calamity. As a subconcept of the yinyang doctrine, another way of explaining such anomalies was the theory of homogeneous induction. Its logic is that things with the same attributes attract one another and generate resonance. From the late Warring States onward, this theory likewise gained wide acceptance across multiple schools. The Yinyang School held that only when human beings follow the laws of nature can affairs proceed smoothly; on this basis, they advanced the seasonal doctrine. The developmental trajectory of this doctrine can be verified through the Guanzi. Some chapters of the Guanzi clearly display the gradual convergence of yinyang with the Five Elements. Current research generally holds their compilation sequence to be “Youguan” → “Sishi” → “Wuxing.” Yet the allocation of the Five Elements in “Youguan” is more finely articulated than in “Sishi” and, moreover, places “soil” in the primary position. The elevation of “soil” to the primary position is related to the steadily strengthening power of the supreme ruler at the time and is not unrelated to the political demands of the Former Han period. Because of the needs of the times, the Yinyang School’s seasonal doctrine underwent change under the influence of Confucian thought, most dramatically in the doctrine of “Punishment and Virtue.” In the Guanzi, punishment and virtue are in effect alternative names for governance that is harmoniously implemented in step with the progression of the four seasons. Hence punishment and virtue are complementary, without any hierarchical ranking between them. By the late Warring States, however, with the rise of powerful monarchs, the hierarchical order of reality could no longer be ignored. At the same time, under the influence of Confucian ideals that envision a world of clear gradations, the view that “virtue leads and punishment supports” emerged. A superior–inferior distinction thus arose even between yin and yang, and an ordered sequence was assigned to all persons, things, and relations distributed according to yinyang.
