Abstract
In May 661, Prince Apagi of Tamra accompanied the fourth Japanese envoy to Tang China and arrived in Japan, marking the beginning of full-scale relations between Tamra and Japan. From then until 693, a total of 11 envoys from Tamra and two from Japan were sent to each other. In the 8th century, no official exchanges between Tamra and Japan can be found in official history. But I think that we can get a glimpse of the relationship between Tamra and Japan in the 8th century through several documents, such as the “Tamra-Dried meat” in the “Tenpyo 10th Year Suo Province Tax Book” and the “Tamra Abalone” wooden tablet excavated from Heijo Palace. On October 21, 738(Tenpyo 10), the governor of Nagato Province, Nukatabe Naohiromaro, who was the fief of Toyoura County, passed through Suo Province on his way to Heijo-kyo with 21 Tamra people, and Suo Province provided them with food from its regular taxes. Next, at the bottom of the “Suo Province Tax Book for the 10th Year of Tenpyo,” there is a record of the “Tamra-Dried meat” that Suo Province purchased from the Tamra people. In fact, among the wooden tablets inscribed with the character ‘脯’ discovered at the ruins of a Japanese palace, there are those with the characters ‘脯’(pig 脯) and ‘脯’(deer 脯), with ‘脯’(deer 脯) accounting for the largest proportion. “Tamra- Dried meat” may be dried meat of deer or roe. On the other hand, the wooden tablet with the inscription “Tamra Abalone” excavated from Heijo Palace was attached to the Imperial Court tribute presented in 745 by Otomobe Tokushima, a householder of Otomobe no Kunimaru who lived in Nasui-go, Ago County, Shima Province. The seafood presented by the Otomobe clan, “Tamra abalone” had the character of a sacrifice. It was purchased and presented by Shima Province to Emperor Shomu, who fell seriously ill in August 745. I think there was a high demand for “Tamra-Dried meat” and “Tamra abalone” due to the major epidemics in the 7th and 9th years of Tenpyo. I believe that in response to the demands of Japanese society at the time, the Tamra people who surrounded the common sea area came to Japan irregularly carrying “Tamra-Dried meat” and “Tamna abalone.”
