Abstract

This study examines the childhood experiences of political scientist Cho Myunghoon, who later lived in Germany, alongside the circumstances of Sunchon during the liberation period, through his middle school diaries. He grew up as a model boy during the colonial era, but after liberation, he began to recognize social contradictions through writing about <Economic Conditions in Sunchon> and reading activities. He joined the leftist circle ‘Ilsimhoe’ at Sunchon Middle School, participating in the 1946 struggle against the ‘National University Plan’ and the March 1st Movement demonstrations in 1947. These experiences became the root of his fundamental critical awareness, leading him to explore the issues of the Cold War and division throughout his life. The current Special Act on the Yeosu-Sunchon Incident sets the starting point of the incident as the 14th Regiment’s refusal to deploy to Jeju Island on October 19, 1948. However, just as the Jeju April 3 Incident was triggered by the March 1st Movement demonstrations in 1947, in Sunchon too, citizens died from police gunfire on the same day. The scope and perspective of research on the Yeosu-Sunchon Incident also need to be examined within the context of various events that unfolded in the post-liberation space, similar to the Jeju April 3 Incident. In this regard, although limited to the experience of a middle school student, Cho Myunghoon’s diary, reflecting his personal involvement, reveals aspects of the 1946 struggle against the ‘National Assembly Plan’ and the March 1st Movement protests of 1947.
