Abstract
Previous research has revealed that not only Chinese culture but also Xianbei-nomadic culture and Western region culture including Central Asian, Indian, and Sasanid Persian culture coexisted in Ye, the capital of the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasties, and Taiyuan, the long-term residence of multiple emperors and military headquarters. This refuted the common belief that the so-called Xianbei, the ruling class was composed of a majority of Xianbei, Turks, Xiongnu nomads and a small number of Chinese from Huisuo Zhen who were assimilated into Chinese culture. This study investigated the coexistence of Chinese, Xianbei-nomadic, and Western Region culture and their deviation in the Hebei Region during the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasties. It is difficult to conclude that the Chinese subjects in any prefectures, commanderies, and counties in the Hebei area, entirely received the nomadic steppe culture or western culture. Many Chinese people excepted a specific person or household such as Zu Ying family and Li Xizong, in the Hebei area, the area behind the capital of Ye, did not accept Xianbei-style culture and Western region culture. But Xianbei-nomadic clothes, trapezoid coffins, and Western regional culture all spread to Hebei area among the ruling and lower class. Depending on their relationship with royal family and government, Chinese people had various deviations, such as accepting Chinese culture and western culture, or not accepting them at all. Even so, it has historical significance in that it is a text that refutes the existing prejudice that the Chinese people of the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasties did not accept Chinese culture or Western culture at all.
