Abstract
This article aims to examine the theories of Muwi-ihwa (無爲而化 transformation via effortless action) of Suwun (水雲) Choe Je-u (崔濟愚, 1824–1864) and Jeungsan (甑山) Kang Il-sun (姜一淳, 1871–1909), two figures who were active during the Late Joseon Period. By analyzing the Muwi-ihwa theories of Suwun and Jeungsan, this aarticle seeks to elucidate their transformation and inheritance of the traditional concept and to discuss the similarities and differences in their systems of thought. The core Daoist concept of Muwi-ihwa was accepted and transformed not only by traditional Confucianism but also by Suwun and Jeungsan, who incorporated it as a key principle in their systems of thought. Suwun found the distinguishing characteristic between Donghak (東學, Eastern Learning) and Seohak (西學, Western Learning) was evident in Muwi-ihwa. He emphasized it as the harmony in the natural realm enacted by Hanulnim (the Supreme God) and as the process by which a practitioner, through their own subjective efforts, received Hanulnim’s harmony and achieved earthly immortality Jeungsan’s Muwi-ihwa, on the other hand, was realized by the divine beings of heaven and earth according to the Degree Numbers (度數) established by him through Cheonji-gongsa (天地公事, the Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth). This process, governed by Shindo (神道 the Dao of gods), is understood as free from artificiality (作爲), human intervention (人爲), and falsehood. Furthermore, Jeungsan’s Muwi-ihwa implies that a practitioner’s diligent adherence to moral duty can resolve difficult situations through the transformative power of Jeungsan’s Virtue (德化). Through these discussions, this study will demonstrate that the concept of Muwi-ihwa in both Suwunist and Jeungsanist Thought emphasizes harmony with Sangje (上帝, the Supreme God) and offers practical implications for self-cultivation based on this harmony.
