Abstract

This study analyzes how the solutions to school bullying are depicted in American and British picture books, based on the causes of school bullying identified in previous research by Choi (2021). Choi categorized the causes of school bullying into four main types: differences in individuality, ability, or appearance; power imbalances between the bully and the bullied; the bully's desire for dominance and controlling tendencies; and the bully’s past experiences of victimization. This study explores how solutions to these four causes are represented in American and British children's picture books. The findings highlight that, in addressing bullying caused by ‘differences’ and ‘past victimization experiences,’ ‘indirect intervention by adults’ emerged as the most important solution. Indirect intervention includes creating an inclusive environment, instilling wisdom and courage in the victim, and providing consistent education. No specific solutions were identified as the primary focus for addressing bullying issues stemming from the bully's personality traits. However, instances were found where indirect intervention by adults served as the starting point for resolving such issues, with the direct involvement of bystanders also being emphasized. School bullying caused by the bully's personality traits or past victimization often takes the form of one-against-many. In these cases, examples were observed where the wise cooperation of victims and the bully's reflection led to resolution. Additionally, efforts to help the bully grow within new relationships after the cessation of violence were also emphasized.
