본 논문에서는 학교폭력이라는 주제를 다룬 영ㆍ미 그림책 30권의 내용을 분석하여 학교폭력의 종류와 원인, 원인에 따른 집단화 양상, 그리고 학교폭력이 행해질 때 피해자나 주변인이 느끼는 심리를 분류하였다. 그 결과 ‘차이’를 인정하지 못하고 놀리는 일대일이나 일대다의 정서 폭력이 가장 높은 빈도수를 차지하였으며 일대일의 정서 폭력이 주변인의 동조로 인하여 다대일로 확산되었을 때는 정서 폭력에 관계 폭력이 동반되게 된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 남과 다른 자신에 대하여 자신감을 키워주는 평상시 교육이 학교폭력이 이루어졌을 때 용기 있게 가해자에게 맞설 수 있는 중요한 요소라는 점을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the contents of thirty American and British picture books that depict school bullying. The analysis focuses on the causes of bullying, the question of whether different types of bullying—individual and group--are associated with the causes of bullying, and the attitudes of bullied individuals and bystanders toward bullying. Emotional bullying is more frequently observed than physical or relational bullying, and the most frequent cause of bullying is differences between the bullied individuals and others. Usually a bully starts to tease the victim about his or her differences, and later bystanders join in the bullying. Then the one-on-one bullying evolves to group bullying, which becomes relational as well as emotional. Through the picture book analysis, it has also been revealed that individuals and bystanders can confront bullies when diversity is promoted through education at home and in the classroom.
