Abstract

This paper analyzes how the colonial legacy and cultural unconscious underlying Korea–Japan relations are represented in contemporary popular culture, focusing on two major cultural hits of 2024: the Korean film Exhuma (Pamyo) and the Japanese drama Eye Love You. Exhuma depicts Japan as a figure of supernatural horror, reinforcing Korean national identity while casting Japan as an irredeemable “absolute Other” and seeking to resolve historical trauma through a transcendental framework. In contrast, Eye Love You portrays the Korean male protagonist as a pure and attractive Other, while simultaneously emphasizing Japan’s scientific and rational superiority, situating Korea once again as an object of “guidance” and “protection.” Both works reiterate binary oppositions rooted in the colonial period—empire/colony, science/superstition, reason/emotion—and thereby expose the limits of communication and reconciliation in bilateral relations. In Exhuma, Japan is positioned solely as an object of elimination, foreclosing any possibility of empathy or dialogue. Likewise, the communication presented in Eye Love You culminates not in mutual recognition but in the dissolution and appropriation of alterity. In this sense, both works reproduce the fundamental difficulty of dialogue between Korea and Japan by absolutizing or objectifying the Other. Through this analysis, the study argues that genuine reconciliation requires moving beyond nationalist identity-building or superficial gestures of exchange, and must begin with a joint critical reflection on totalitarianism, statism, and the instrumentalization of the Other, grounded in universal values. Furthermore, it suggests that cultural imagination, when mediating such reflection, can open a new horizon of mutual understanding beyond exclusionary nationalisms.
