Abstract

This study aims to examine the reception of Judas in Osamu Dazai’s The Confession of Judas, with a comparative consideration of Kaishi Yamagishi’s A Human Christ Chronicle . Focusing on episodes narrated through Judas’s monologue in The Confession of Judas, this paper conducts a comparative analysis of the two texts, exploring both similarities and differences. In the process, it investigates the relationships between Judas, Jesus, and the disciples, centering on Judas’s anguish and emotional flow. Chapter II considers what kind of figure Judas is in the two works, confirming “greed” as a shared trait. Chapter III compares Judas in relation to Jesus, focusing on episodes presented in each text. Chapter IV examines the circumstances and reasons for Judas’s betrayal of Jesus. In The Chapter of Judas, Yamagishi depicts Judas as if he were used by Jesus, portraying him as the final peripheral figure through whom Jesus’s suffering is explored. Dazai’s portrayal of Judas, by contrast, extends from his inquiry into the human condition, suggesting that the author’s own existential anguish is also reflected. Through the figures of Judas and Jesus, both Dazai and Yamagishi demonstrate that genuine suffering and sincerity do not outwardly manifest but instead reside deep within the heart.
