Abstract
This study explores the transnational cultural practice referred to as Korea-Japan “collaboration.” By examining how this practice has transformed amid Korea’s historical and political changes, it seeks to reconstruct the genealogy of narratives of mutual understanding and reconciliation attempted through popular media as an aspect of modern and contemporary Korea-Japan cultural exchange. Since the 1960s, attempts at collaboration repeatedly reproduced the archetype of the Hyeonhaetan Narrative, which sought to reconcile the colonial-imperial past through themes of love and humanism, yet these efforts were continually thwarted under the constraints of the Cold War and authoritarian politics. With democratization and globalization in the 1990s, a turning point was reached: the imaginative scope of collaboration shifted from reconciliation centered on historical memory to the sharing of contemporaneous sensibilities and transnational everydayness. Thereafter, collaboration relegated historical conflicts to the background and was redefined as the outcome of popular cultural exchange driven by market logics, gradually losing its monumental function as a “bridge.” This study critically reconstructs this transition in the context of continuity and rupture from the Hyeonhaetan Narrative to the Post-Hyeonhaetan Narrative, demonstrating how collaboration mediates both the politics and the cultural imagination of Korea-Japan relations, and ultimately contributing to the expansion of transnational cultural studies.
