Abstract
This study analyzes the causes of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine from the perspective of the prospect theory that a risk-taking strategy would be established in the area of loss. According to the results of the analysis, it was found that the reference points of Russian policy makers choice were the creation of a geopolitical profit space and the stability of the Russian regime. Zelenskyy’s strong will to join NATO, the regular Ukrain army’s bombardment of the Donbas region, the decrease of Putin’s approval rating within the country, and the anti-government protests in Kazakhstan and Belarus made the reference point of choice as the area of loss. Therefore, this study suggests that the Russian legislators invaded Ukraine with the risk-seeking strategy to comprise Russia’s decreased influence and the instability of the domestic regime within Ukraine.
