Abstract
This study examined how elementary students with low academic achievement engaged in Korean language classes. Using participant observation as the primary research method, it focused on two students—Baek Yi-jin (Grade 2) and Seon Woo-gyeol (Grade 6), both pseudonyms. Their homeroom teachers conducted classroom observations in a fully participatory role, while one professor observed indirectly as a non-participant and conducted partial direct observations through two classroom visits. The findings revealed shared characteristics between the two students, including learned helplessness, passive attitudes, task avoidance, reluctance to ask questions, and a lack of learning strategies. Both students consistently exhibited non-learning behaviors and demonstrated limited communication with peers and teachers. There were also differences between the two students, who were in different school years and had varying degrees of academic underachievement. The significance of this study lies in its empirical examination of how low-achieving students in Korean language participated in class through classroom observation.
