아리스토텔레스의 ‘우정’을 통한 상호문화적 소통의 가능성

21세기 세계는 완전한 다문화 사회가 되었다. 그러나 다문화 사회는 그 짧은 역사만큼이나 이에 대한 논의의 역사 역시 짧다. 그러다 보니 우리는 다문화 사회에 대한 제대로 된 논의 없이 다문화 사회에서 살게 되었고 이로 인해 다문화를 근거로 한 다양한 문제들이 발생하게 되었다. 지금까지 세계는 다문화 사회에 대한 가장 보편적인 모델로 다문화주의를 제시해 왔다. 그러나 다문화주의 만으로는 여전히 문화들 간의 갈등으로 인한 사회적 문제가 충분히 해결되지는 못했다. 이러한 문화들 간의 갈등을 더 근본적으로 해결하기 위해서는 다문화주의적 문화소통에서 말해지지 않았던 사회적 연대성이 사람들 사이에 필요해 보인다. 이에 필자는 상호문화주의를 추천한다. 다문화주의는 문화가 가진 정체성의 고유성을 너무 강조하다보니 문화의 정체성은 그 집단의 문화 내에 고정되는 것으로 파악된다. 이에 비해 상호문화주의는 각 문화들이 언제나 서로가 서로에게 영향을 주고받음으로써 그들의 정체성은 지속적으로 변화한다는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 다문화주의가 고정된 정체성을 말하고 있다면 상호문화주의는 ‘잠정적’ 정체성을 말하고 있다. 언제든 타문화의 소통을 통해 변화할 수 있는 가능성을 열어두고자 하는 것이다. 더하여 이들은 잠정적 정체성을 형성해 가는 문화들의 상호소통에서 중요한 것은 소통에 참여하는 모든 문화들의 동등한 지위가 전제되는 것이라고 한다. 다시 말해 동등한 지위를 가진 문화들이 자유롭게 대화 하고 소통함으로써 그리고 가능하다면 상호 변화함으로써 타자에 대한 진정한 이해가 가능해 지고 이를 통해 문화 간의 갈등 역시 해결가능하다고 보는 것이다. 여기서 하나의 질문이 있을 수 있다. 그렇다면 어떻게 각 문화가 동등하게 대화하고 소통할 수 있겠는가? 필자는 아리스토텔레스가 말하는 탁월성을 통한 ‘우정’을 바탕으로 한다면 각 문화들이 동등한 지위를 가진 채 대화할 수 있는 최소한의 환경이 마련될 것이고, 이로 인해 상호문화적 소통의 현실적 실현 가능성이 높아 질 것이라고 생각한다.
Abstract
The world in the 21st century has become entirely multicultural. However, multiculturalism has a short history of research as well as a short history. So, since we dwell in multicultural society without any proper discussion of the multicultural society, we have various problems based on the multiculturality. Until now, we have regarded multiculturalism as the most useful model to solve problems in a multicultural society. However, multiculturalism is not able to crack social problems resulting from conflicts between different cultures. . In order to resolve conflicts between cultures, it is necessary to discuss understanding and communication between cultures that multiculturalism has not given due attention to. Therefore, I would like to suggest the interculturalism. Multi-culturalism emphasizes the uniqueness of the culture identity too much, it is perceived to be fixed within the culture of the group. Interculturalism, on the other hand, focuses on the fact that their identity is constantly changing due to the interaction actively taking place with one culture to another. If former speaks of a fixed identity, the latter speaks of a “tentative” identity. Interculturalism wants to leave the possibility open, wherein any identity can be changed through communication with another culture. In addition, they say that what is important in the mutual communication of the cultures forming the tentative identity is the premise of the equal status of all the cultures involved in communication. In other words, it is seen that cultures with equal status freely communicate, and if possible their mutual change, so that each culture can truly understand the struggle and resolve conflicts between cultures. There can be one question here. How can cultural exchanges of interculturalism be achieved? I believe that, based on Aristotle's “philia” the realization of intercultural communication will become more realistic to achieve.
