시민 소통의 이상적 조건 - 아리스토텔레스의 ‘사회적 우애’를 중심으로 -

본 연구는 아리스토텔레스의 윤리학 및 정치학 사상에 나타나는 필리아(philia)를 기존 번역어인 ‘친애’나 ‘우정’이 아니라 ‘우애’로 번역하면서 ‘필리아 폴리티케’(philia politike), 즉 ‘사회적 우애’라는 의미의 우애와 시민들의 합의 혹은 한마음을 의미하는 ‘호모노이아’(homonoia) 개념을 그가 제시한 시민 소통의 조건으로 이해해보고자 한다. 우리는 여기서 아리스토텔레스가 개인의 관계를 표현하던 ‘우애’ 개념을 사회적 관계를 규정하는 용어로 의미를 확장함에 있어서 시민 교육으로서의 덕-훌륭함 교육을 강조했다는 점에 주목한다. 시민의 덕-훌륭함은 한 국가 사회 안에서 서로 다른 입장에 따라 쟁점이 형성될 때 우리가 그 쟁점을 둘러싸고 의견 충돌이 있더라도, 함께 사는 공동체로서 ‘폴리스’를 유지하는 데 중요한 요건이 된다. 본 연구가 지향하는 초점은 아리스토텔레스의 이론에서 사회적 우애의 바탕에는 시민의 덕-훌륭함(arete)이 요구된다는 사실, 즉 훌륭한 시민들이 사회적 우애를 이룬다는 사실을 분명히 하면서, 한 국가 공동체의 시민들이 서로 의견이 대립하고 주장이 상충하더라도 ‘법적 우애’와 ‘도덕적 우애’를 포함하는 ‘사회적 우애’를 발휘하여 함께 사는 공동체(koinonia)를 유지하는 것이 참된 의미에서의 ‘한마음’임을 주장하는 데 있다. 즉 도덕적 우애와 결합된 정치적 우애의 의미를 밝힘으로써, 폴리스 내에서 훌륭함을 증진하는 시민 교육의 중요성을 강조하는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper tries to understand the concept of ‘philia’(social fraternity) and ‘homonoia’(oneness of mind) in Aristotle's ethical and political thought as the conditions of civil communication he put forward. I note here that Aristotle emphasized virtue(arete) education as a education of citizens(polites) in expanding the concept of friendship, which used to express personal relationships, into terms that define social relationships. Citizens’ virtue or excellence is an important requirement for maintaining a ‘polis’ as a community in which we live together, even if we have disagreements over the issue when an issue is formed according to different positions within a society. I will reveal in Aristotle's theory that the basis of social friendship requires the virtue of citizens, namely that good citizens achieve social fraternity. Even if citizens of a community have conflicting opinions and claims with each other, it is the ‘homonoia’(oneness of mind) in its true sense to maintain the community in which they live together by exercising the “social fraternity” that includes "legal fraternity" and "moral fraternity." In conclusion, this study points out that by showing the meaning of political fraternity combined with moral fraternity in Aristotle, he emphasizes the importance of civic education to promote virtue within the ‘polis’ community.
