Abstract

The study aims to analyze what propaganda is lurking in Russian President Putin's speech in relation to the Russian-Ukrainian war through a discourse-historical approach. To this end, the discourse- historical approach's nomination and argumentation strategy have identified what kind of discourse Putin is shaping with regard to war. First, nomination strategy divided the categories of in-group and out-group. The people of the Donbass region were divided into categories of ingroups, and the Ukrainian ruling regime was divided into categories of outer groups. Members of the inner group were named “our compatriots” and “comrades,” and they were also named objects in kinship relationships. Putin, on the other hand, divided the Ukrainian regime into foreign groups, reinforcing his negative image by portraying it as the ruling class that holds and maintains power. And without direct mention of the war, what happened in Ukraine was generalized or abstracted. He sought to show the image of a rational leader through a logical naming for his actions. In the argumentation strategy, arguments were used in the erroneous manner of naturalistic arguments to justify Russia's military actions based on historical facts. He also described Crimea and the incident as an analogy argument. and in Putin's speech, he was able to grasp the fallacy of the black-and-white thinking argument that portrays Russia as good and Ukraine as evil, and the slippery slope that the responsibility for the bloodshed lies entirely with the Ukrainian-dominated regime due to Ukrainian hostilities.
