Abstract
This paper seeks to find ways to rethink the history of colonial Korean cinema through a close reading of Baek Moonim’s Im Hwa’s Cinema. Looking at Baek’s work, the study examines the extent to which Im Hwa retained his subjectivity as an author while writing about colonial Korean cinema. Building a critique of Baek’s inspirational argument on the “fluidity of colonial Korean cinema,” the paper explores the limitations as well as the visions offered by the book in its attempt to rewrite film history. The fact that the notion of Korean cinema has shifted according to its historically specific conditions contributes to a better understanding of its discontinuous history. However, this does not necessarily explain the direction in which colonial Korean cinema was driven at the height of the Japanese empire. With this in mind, the study investigates the way Im Hwa, who was the subject of film history and theory writing, nevertheless retreated to a secondary position as an impersonal pronoun in the interest of historicization. Thus, the study seeks to revisit the subject-ness of Im Hwa in his film theory and history in order to redeem the subjectivity of the colonized in the historiography of Korean cinema. Lastly, we return to the question of “Im Hwa’s Cinema” as being somewhat suppressed in Im Hwa’s Cinema, and reframe the dialectics of Korean cinema as an art and an industry. By conceptualizing Im Hwa’s Korean cinema as a singularity irreducible to anything that attempts to subsume it, the study suggests a possible way to bring to the fore any potentiality of “Im Hwa’s cinema” that was yet to come, but was surely conceived in his time as a cinema of the future.
