Abstract

This paper examines the process and logic by which Korea’s female-oriented genre—encompassing Boys’ Love (BL) and heterosexual romance, yuri/GL, and amateur creative practices like secondary creations and original character communities by female otaku—has functioned as a “forum or community for women” and a “battleground of discourse” surrounding feminist practice since the feminist reboot. Especially, this paper focuses on the process, logic, and subsequent developments surrounding the “discovery” of yuri/GL (Girls Love)—depicting romance and sexuality between female characters—as an alternative “female narrative” to BL, focusing on women’s “agency” in evaluating women’s narrative and representations. After the Feminism Reboot, women’s narrative graph and Escape the Corset Diary were adopted en masse by female otaku who expressed a favorable stance towards online feminism. In this process, yuri/GL, which portrays same-sex love between female characters, was “discovered” as an alternative to BL. This phenomenon can be traced back to an exclusive interpretation of ‘agency,’ which posits that the expression of women is confined to narratives and representations featuring female characters, created by women. Moreover, a novel GL fandom came to the fore, proffering a distinct content and style of female narrative—embodied by the “non-romance” of “Escape the Corset female characters”—as an alternative to prevailing yuri-style romance between feminine female characters. This fandom has given rise to debates surrounding the concepts of ‘misogynistic yuri’ and ‘Excape the Corset GL’, and has introduced the notion of ‘default female characters’ as a case study in the exploration of novel representations of women. While these movements have contributed to increasing the diversity and visibility of women’s representations, it must also be noted that they are based on an exclusive concept of women’s agency, thereby oversimplifying the complex relationship between reality, representation, and fantasy, and that eventually they failed at obtaining Yuri/GL fandom’s support in general.
