Abstract
In Plato’s Apology of Socrates, Socrates asks his judges and bystanders mê thorubein(‘not to make a disturbance’) at his trial in the following vein: (1) He asks them in advance not to make a disturbance even though he would adopt the same as the words he uses and the way he talks in the market place(agora), then he once again call for them not to do that in order to draw their attention to his request(17c-18a, 27b-c). (2) He asks them not to make a disturbance, even though he would mention that the Delphic Oracle says that ‘no one is wiser than Socrates’(20e-21a). (3) He asks them not to make a disturbance, even though he would say that he is a gift from god to Athenians and a sort of gadfly that awakens the city of Athens that is comparable to a great and noble, but rather sluggish horse(30c). In sum, it can be interpreted that these disturbances represent discontent among judges and bystanders in his apology, which would affect his sentence. Each of these disturbances shows their psycho-emotional responses to him, such as hatred and anger, collective jealousy and envy, their feelings about his arrogance and stubbornness.
